Botswana

From the Okavango delta to the Kalahari desert

Recognised as one of the most iconic safari destinations in Africa, Botswana’s magical Okavango Delta is at the heart of most family adventures. The Okavango’s vast waterways and islands are teeming with wildlife and we discover them on foot, by canoe and in specialised vehicles – staying in wonderful camps and lodges along the way.

But Botswana’s safari magic extends further than the magical clear Okavango waters.  Just south of the delta, the untouched desert environment of the Kalahari is a superb family adventure destination, with unique wildlife, stark beautiful scenery and an array of activities for all ages.

Botswana’s location makes it a great combination with a trip to South Africa, Zimbabwe or Zambia.  With international flights in and out of Victoria Falls, many of our adventures also feature the Falls and the beautiful Chobe region of northern Botswana.

Ideas for a family adventure in Botswana

Botswana’s combination of desert and delta offers fantastic experiences and unique places to stay.  The time of year at which you choose to travel makes a big difference and below we list some guidance notes on what to do in the different seasons.

Unknown to many, Botswana is a vast arid desert landscape with the Okavango oasis surrounded by open plains and much dryer conditions. The Okavango delta is a must of course, but a trip into the Kalahari or to the Makgadikgadi Pans should be equally high on your list.  Depending on the time of year, these landscapes are transformed into a green blanket of fresh growth, teeming with animals and birds.  Some of our favourite family activities include paddling canoes through the delta, sleeping out under the stars in the desert or riding on horseback between remote wilderness camps and lodges.

The Okavango Delta by land

Fishing, swimming and learning how to 'paddle'

Exploring the crystal waters of the delta is a magical experience and there are a lot of options to choose from. Certain camps in the delta focus primarily on these must do water experiences; including traditional canoe (‘mokoro’) excursions, sunset boat experiences and kayaking.

Game drives, animal signs and night explorations

Traditional land explorations in the delta take place on open safari vehicles and are led by skilled and qualified guides. From time to time a short on foot experience will bring you closer to the finer details and immerse you in a world of tracking, signs and practical bush knowledge.

The deserts of Botswana

Tracking, sleep outs and cooking around the fire

The romance of more arid open landscapes brings new animals into focus, and allow a more immersed experience on foot, sleeping under the stars and enjoying longer days out exploring the vastness. Star beds, campfires, unique cultures and magical electric storms bring these dramatic areas to light.
