Ideas for a family adventure in Namibia

Uniquely adapted wildlife including the black rhino, elephant and lion roam these harsh landscapes and the notorious Skeleton Coast has claimed more than a few ships with its dramatic seas and cold waters.

This is an ideal destination for a wide variety of family experiences - from dolphin watching by kayak to hot air ballooning over the dunes at sunrise.

Combine a self-drive safari with sleep-outs in the desert, ancient cultures and fascinating wildlife.

A self drive adventure

Namibia's flying Safari

With vast distances between regions, the most efficient way to travel if you are hoping to see more of the country is flying. A flying safari normally consists of 2-3 night stops taking in a few unique experiences. These could include hot air ballooning over the dunes, a Cape Fur seal safari, tracking desert adapted elephant in the northern deserts and experiencing Etosha National Park.

Self drive through the Namib

Namibia's vast landscapes are perfect for self-exploration and this is a fantastic way to explore as a family. Collect a fully equipped 4x4 vehicle in Windhoek and head south towards the mighty red dunes of Sossusvlei, explore the region including Sesriem Canyon and stay at wonderful Wolwedans in the heart of the Namib desert. Camp out in the wilds of Namibia and enjoy the magic of these untarnished night skies.

The vast north awaits

If a family adventure means 'off the beaten track' for you, then the Kunene region of northern Namibia awaits. Remote, vast and wild areas of this magical country include the area where the Skeleton coast collides with the mighty Kunene river, and hidden in this secluded corner is Serra Cafema camp - enjoy a sunset boat experience, quad bike exploration or visit a local Himba village.
